The Kenneth Weistche Memorial Scholarship

The Kenneth Weistche Memorial Scholarship was established to honour the life and  legacy of Kenneth Weistche (Waskaganish), a Survivor of the Indian Boarding Homes Program (IBHP) and a passionate advocate for IBHP survivors, Indigenous healing, social justice,  and recovery. This scholarship supports students pursuing studies related to Indigenous  health, wellness, and advocacy who demonstrate a commitment to community service,  cultural knowledge, and personal or academic growth in the health and advocacy professions.

Eligibility

The $3000 scholarship is open to students in all academic programs and is renewable for  up to 4 years, depending upon the length of the program. Eligible programs include  Certificate and Diploma Programs, Bachelor's, Master’s, and PhD Programs.

Applicants must be enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada. Applicants must either:

Be Survivors of the Indian Boarding Homes Program (1952-1991) or descendants;

Be engaged in academic studies or research directly related to the Indian Boarding Homes Program experience.

Preference will be given to direct and intergenerational Indian Boarding Home Program Survivors, and Indigenous students or those with lived experience related to addictions, recovery, or community healing  work.

Application Requirements

 1. A letter of intent (1–2 pages) outlining: 

• Your interest in Indigenous health, wellness and recovery 

• Your connection to the Indian Boarding Homes Program (personal, familial, or academic) – provide specific details that can verify the connection 

• How your studies align with the Indian Boarding Homes Program, healing or advocacy

2. Proof of enrollment in a post-secondary program;  

3. A resume and a recent high-resolution .jpg photograph (used for successful applicant announcement)

4. Two reference letters from: teacher/professor, supervisor, Elder, or community leader
